I think the key to making the book a mammoth success is the Argentina-Australia comparison. How did Australia manage its relative decline and come out the other side as a rich industrial and post-industrial economy?

Thanks, Brad. I think you’re right.

Unfortunately, it’s a hard one to answer. Australia obviously had better institutions than Argentina, but it also had more natural resources, especially minerals. How to distinguish between the effects of the two will be a big methodological issue.

I wasn’t consciously making that point, but yes: how globalisation benefits some regions more than others and the political consequences of that is a big theme in Argentina’s 19th-century history...
